contents page
The
first thing I like about this contents page is the colour scheme. The greens
really stand out from the black red and white. Also the smaller images give a
quick and clear look at the articles and what to expect. I like this detail as
it gives the reader an incite into the articles and therefore attracting them
to want to read on. The main sell line along with the rest of the sell lines
break up the page effectively, this also makes the contents list stand out more
as it is separated from this making it easier to navigate and see. Also how the
contents is split up into different section e.g. New, Studio News gives a clear
look and breakup of the section. Furthermore the contents titles are all in
capitals, standing out more and being more clear allowing people to see them as well as page numbers being bold to show people the pages to find each article clearly, making the magazine as a whole easier to navigate. The subscription along the bottom gives some information on how to subscribe as well as deals and offers making people want to subscribe in order to get the deals and therefore the magazine. i really like this idea as it gives the readers more reason to want to buy the magazine as it gives them something back such as deals and offers that they will enjoy. the masthead is very appealing as the logo still stands out, but the "this week" in bold white writing on the black boarder adds to this and in my opinion the way the it is worded is very appealing, giving an overview of the full week making me as eel as other readers excited to see what its about.
This is a very different layout but one that is very appealing and eye catching as the main articles have an image allowing the reader to see the artist or topic clearly pushing them to read it. the quotes from the articles give a preview of what to expect and this once again will make the reader want to read it as it may contain a little humor or controversy or even talking about new/old albums. Also under each quote there is a line or two of writing giving a brief description of the article giving readers an idea of what the topic of the article will be about or by using word play to add more suspense on what its about. The colors are very bland and basic but this adds to the appeal as this way the images, text and color of the numbers stand out even more, popping of the page and attracting the eye. the masthead does not contain the logo, but it does contain the date which i like but at the same time i would prefer to have a logo, even if it was small to allow the readers to know the magazine. Once again NME has used the same subscription design, this time using a bright red to stand out as well as using images of past front covers to show new readers the quality of their magazines.
A third contents page i looked like and liked the design is of a Q magazine that featured the Foo Fighters as main image and the design fits and works around this. i like how the main image has a lot of attitude about it, this also gives the page a nice layout as the contents list is around this image, as well as other smaller images, with the page numbers making it quick and easy to find articles. The logo is located and easily seen in the top left corner as well as an issue number, this allows readers to see the magazine name and make easily as well as knowing what issue they are up to if they want to buy it weekly.

Double Page Spread
Once in a blue moon a star comes
along and bursts onto the scene and owns it. Whether or not existing artists
agree with it or not, it just happens… and that’s exactly what’s happened here.
Born
and bred in a housing estate in Sunderland, North East England, known for its
lower working class culture, along with the violence and drugs, to touring the
world. This is the case for Callum Burdon. When asked about his recent success
he simply replied, “it was inevitable….” With the confidence and talent he
possess’ you’d think he has been doing this for some time, but you couldn’t be
more wrong. “One day I was sat at home listening to some records before a
football match I was playing, and I thought to myself, everyone wants to be a
footballer and you get paid loads but you can’t enjoy it, rock stars on the
other hand get to tour the world doing whatever they want, and that’s when I
realized I was in the wrong field of work” ever since that moment when he was
16 all his time on getting to the big stage, now, the young 18 has done just
that. His debut “the revival” album has made a statement in and out of the
music industry. Hitting number 1 for his album showed the industry just what he
is capable of, but it’s outside of that which is getting people talking. His
lyrics and interviews have caught the attention of the working class, being
from that background himself, he aims to make music for the people and this has
shown. “When I was growing up there’d be fights, gangs, drugs, pretty much
everything and people knew about this, but that didn’t change a thing. The
government wasn’t interested in helping a dirty messed up estate, or even
helping the lower working classes as a whole and this needs to be seen and
realized. People can complain and even write sad songs about it like I have,
but there’s no time for tears when you live the real world and that’s the
message I’m trying to get across. Instead of complaining, do something with
your life and fight it.” Since playing his first gig at the bonny pit lad back
in April 2013 in front of around 7people, to headlining Glastonbury just 2 year
on, we can all expect and look forward to bigger, better and more controversy
from this modern day robin hood.
1.What
made you want to do this?
Well
I pretty much had nothing else to do and this just seemed like a good idea at
the time and so far it’s worked out.
2.Did
your parents support you? Why?
At
first they didn’t but after awhile when they saw what I was making of it they
stopped complaining
I
dropped out of school to do this, I never really listened and had what they
called discipline troubles and they weren’t happy with this.
3.
Are you happy with what you’ve achieved so far at just an early stage of your
career?
Of
course I’m happy, I was a nobody, no x factor or shows like that, no one
helping me, just all myself,
see not many people can do that. If people don’t get the help they need they
just give up, I was never born with a silver spoon and that’s what made me, the
grit and determination, and look where I am now.
4.
Do you have any concerts coming up?
I’ve
got a few gigs lined up and a stadium tour. But to be honest I liked the
smaller gigs is academy’s and the odd few arenas, this way I don’t really have
to do much, the crowd sings every line to every song, I just say one or two
words and that’s it. The atmosphere is a lot better then, you feel apart of
something and that’s something you don’t get everyday.
5. What’s
next for you? Where do you go form here?
Considering
I went straight to the top there’s not much more I can do. Ill continue to do
what I’m doing to remain here, I’m not going go all mainstream anytime soon to
achieve this either. Most artist change their sound or image to fit in with
what’s “in” but I’m not about that.
Target audience
Target audience
My target audience will be from around 16 onwards and fans
of the mod/indie genre. However my magazine may appeal to some under the age of
16 and then not to people above 21 as it all depends on their taste to the
music. If someone is a fan of the music then they may choose to read it. On the
other hand though I will try to use a writing style that fits and is aimed more
at people 16 to 30 as this gives me the flexibility to use different words and
style of writing that will appeal to all these ages.
I will try to use a different style and layout to other magazines so that my magazine is different, but i will look at existing magazines that aim at these ages and take key points that will help and allow me to appeal to these ages more.
Callum Burdon- age 18. Gender- Male. Hobbies- football and going out with friends.
"I like this type of genre and enjoy reading the magazines that look at it. i prefer to be able to see a good balance between text and images. so i like it when text is broken up with images of the band at gigs and other pictures" (image)
steph wilson- age 29 female. likes relaxing and going for meals.
"i wouldnt say im a huge fan of this music genre or reading magazines. i find that they can be very boring if you cant get into it, the text and images have to engage the readers and get them interested, so if i was to read a magazine id like it to be exciting and something id never seen before with images showing what im reading to give me a better idea of whats going on"
Brandon Finnigan- age 17, male, likes reading and watching films.
"to be honest im not a fan ofthis music, but if a magaizne and the article is good enough id still read it because i would be finding out new inormation. too many images makes the text less appealing and people wont even bother to read it, so id like to see more writing.

research into students work
Research into students work
One
students work I looked at was Natalie Howey and the first thing that I noticed
when looking at her work was how simple and easy it was to navigate due to the
bar on the side containing the dates and months of work submitted. This made it
easier to find different parts of her blog allowing viewers to find what they
are looking for a lot quicker and easier. The very bright colours of her blog
make it appealing and easy on the eye, attracting people to it, as it looks
nice to read due to thus. Also the flowers around the border add to the
attraction as these give it a soft touch, but helps the article stand out even
more due to the contrast in colours
I like the format
and layout of Natalie’s double page spread as this is the type of style and
design I am looking to use. I like the large main image that shows exactly who
the article is about and catches the eye of a reader. Also the large sell line
is very attractive and appealing giving the full double page spread a nice look
and feel to it. Furthermore this layout makes it very easy to navigate and read
as it is very easy on the eye. I also like how the text is broken up by quotes
and text within shapes and different colours.
When looking at this students work I realised I like
this style of contents page as it is quite messy and all over the place which
fits the genre and image surrounding the genre. I would like to use this layout
and design, but I also have some other ideas so I will have to see what works
best. I like the colours and contrast and how everything works well and fits together.
