looking at magazines

I like all the word play and using song titles etc. to draw the readers in. like this plain background as the image; catchy play of words for the sell line and just the full magazine is appealing. I also like the colours used to make certain parts stand out, as they are important, controversial or even just to break up the text and will look to use this.

week 9

After looking at magazines and deciding what genre and style of magazine i would be working towards, i decided to have a go and make a practice magazine this week in order to see if i have improved at Photoshop, as well as trying to work towards hat my product will look like.

week 8

This week i have decided to research my potential target audience and look at music magazines from different genres in order to see what i would like to work towards. This meant looking at different front covers, contents pages and double page spreads in order to see what professional magazines looked like.

week 7

Today i looked a the marks i was awarded for my college magazine, this allowed me to see exactly what areas i needed to work and improve on.

Provide answers in paragraph form to the questions below that

are relevant to your production.

1.    Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects )? Inside the room there is no trailing wires that I know of so there are little risks inside. On the way to the site there is many main roads so traffic may cause a problem if there is heavy traffic.
2.    What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised? I will check there are no wires or cables when I go to take my photos I will do a quick check off the room to ensure there is no trailing wires and I will go at a time between 9:30 and 11:30 so that I miss the heavier traffic.
3.    Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this? I don’t think the time of day and the weather will have an affect on my photo shoot, as I will most likely be doing my photos in door. If I decide to change my setting to outside to get a different effect then this may cause problems.
4.    Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want? I am looking to use a white background or a brick wall. If I use the white background this will be so that I can use different lighting and effects, but if I use the brick wall I will have to rely on natural lighting.
5.    Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?  If I decide to take my photos outside against a brick wall, natural lighting, weather will determine how well the photos come out and whether or not I will have to use a flash or a different setting.
6.    Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind? If I take my photos in a studio I will need permission to do so and will have to get this from the college or university who owns the room. On the other hand if I do the photos outside it will depend whether or not I need permission as it maybe on public property and therefore will not need permission.
7.    Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio at Shiney)? I will need to book a time that is suitable and fits the availability of my model, the room times and me.
8.    Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect? Other people will not be a problem as if I book the studio it will only be my model and me in the room. If I do it outside people walking past may cause a bit of a problem but not too much where it will stop the process all together.
9.    Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B? I am going to use some props but if they don’t go to plan then I am not that reliant on them where it would stop or ruin my photos. I have made sure I have the props ahead of time so that they are ready. For a plan b I will either try to use a different prop or none at all, which I would still be ok with.

10. Finally, have you thought of every eventuality…? I think I have but some things may happen on the day, which I cannot help or may happen unexpectedly, and if so I will have to find away to work around these.

week 6

Today i planned on creating my preliminary task college magazine, this was the first time using Photoshop so i planned to have a play around and see what i could do. My aim was to learn what tools did what and too get comfortable with photoshop.

photoshoot planning

Unfortunately at the times of trying to get some practice photos my model was busy and was on his way to a wedding, so before they set off i got some quick photos of him wearing a suit. the posses themselves are not what i want and am hoping to use, but the style of photos and clothes style are what i may use as i think they work well. i will use some different clothes and backgrounds with effects to see what works well and what doesn't.
i also had a look at some backgrounds that i may use instead of an outside shot or use the studio. i may use these backdrops and background props to add to the style and genre of my magazine as this will make it look different from others.

Photo shoot planning document

What emotional impact do you want your photography do have upon the reader? How?
I want to reader to see and feel the working class, rough look and feeling that my magazines put across. I will hope to do this by the images and effects, backdrops and props as well as the sell lines and text.

What personnel do you need? Who are you going to photograph?
I have arranged for 1 model, Callum Burden to take photos of.

What props will you need?
I will try and use a cigarette or a bottle to give the feeling the artist is quite anti-social and working class.

How are you going to emphasise colour?
I will attempt to use contrasting colours so that they stand out more to emphasise the writing, sell lines and pictures.

Have you briefed your personnel/models?
Yes I asked them if they would be available to do the photos and explained to them the type of look I am going for to fit my magazine so they can prepare correctly.

What lighting will you need? Any other equipment?
If I use a studio I will use a variety of lighting to see which one fits and works well, if I do it outside however I will have to use the natural lighting. I may use props but at the moment I don’t think I need any more equipment.

Where will you shoot? Will you need a backdrop?
I will either shoot in a studio or outside. If I chose to do it in the studio I will use a plain backdrop and then use lighting etc. to make different effects. But if I chose to do it outside I will use a brick wall or a different backdrop to create those effects.

Make-up? Costume?

I will not use any make-up but I will provide some clothes so that the style fits my magazine.

preliminary

I got my preliminary task marked once completed and it was marked, these are some general comments and improvements.

time management- week 5
